Sweet Potato Prices July

Prices of sweet potatoes in Kenya have hit Ksh. 6000 per 90KG bag from last week's Ksh.5000 which is the highest peak ever seen. For farmers, these are the best we've ever had! There is increasing demand for sweet potatoes especially amongst middle class households in Nairobi and this is a good trend for the future.

Most middle class families are now consuming sweet potatoes in bulk due to its high nutritional value and this has clearly fueled the high demand. Sweet potatoes are one of the super foods - loaded with nutritious vitamins, minerals and, of course, a great taste. The prices are expected to remain stable in the next one month or so before the peak harvest season of August September.

The Kenyan farmers have  also been helped by low competition from Tanzania due partly to difference in planting seasons. When Tanzania harvests, the prices will drop to as low as Ksh. 2200 per bag! A problem farmers now have to contend with is the steep costs of transport with transporters now charging north of Ksh.600 per bag to transport the potatoes to Nairobi.
